Your Summary Care Record

A new central NHS Computer System is coming to this area soon. It’s called the Summary Care Record (SCR).
The idea is to help emergency doctors & nurses when you contact them out of normal surgery hours.

To start with, it will just hold details of your medications & allergies.

Later on, as the central NHS computer system (or “Spine”) develops, other NHS staff involved in your care will be able to access it. Any relevant information from hospitals, out of hours services and specialists’ letters will be added as well.

Your information will be copied from our practice’s medical records and held on NHS databases.

As with all new systems there are pros and cons.

In its favour:
When you speak to an emergency doctor you may forget to mention something which turns out to be important….if they have access to your records it might avoid mistakes or problems. (Please note : you should be asked to give your consent each time a member of NHS staff wishes to access your record, unless you are medically unable to do so).

On the other hand:
You may have strong views about sharing personal information at the level of this practice.

Patients will have absolute control over whether or not their records are available on the SCR. The British Medical Association believes that there are potential benefits and the decision to have a SCR should rest with patients. They want patients to be fully aware of the implications and that their implied consent is valid.

Please note: for patients already registered with the practice it is assumed you want a Summary Care Record unless you actively opt out. This practice believes everyone should have the same control.

You can pick up a letter explaining the full details about this and also an Opt In/Opt Out Form when you next visit Sixways Clinic, or if you are passing. Please fill this in and return it to us, so that we can act according to your wishes.

PLEASE NOTE: If you wish to opt out of this scheme, we need to know in writing by the end of August. Many thanks.

 Moving on...

You may have heard that Dr Morison has now left Sixways Clinic. He will be focusing on his work in medical education. We know he will be missed by patients and surgery staff alike and we wish him continued success in this new phase of his career.

We are very pleased to announce that Dr Simon Stacey has now joined Sixways. Many of our patients will already have met him, as he has worked here in the past as a Locum GP.

Welcome also:

We have recently welcomed Dr Georgina Charlwood to the team.

We are also delighted to welcome Jane Wooldridge and Karen Gibson, who have joined our nursing staff.  As you may know, we said farewell in March to Nurse Jean...we wish her well for the future.
